This excellently proportioned structure was designed in the Neo-classical style by Malcolm McPherson of Perth. Its notable architectural features are the "floating" semi-circular leaded transoms of the central second storey windows and the temple design. The latter was common to all important public buildings of the period, and is here reflected in the dominating pediment and the well defined projection of the central block. The building was erected 1842-43 as the court-house and gaol of the Bathurst District. It replaced an earlier court-house which had been built on the site in 1822 when the District was established, but had been destroyed by fire in 1841. Since its completion the building has served as a centre for local judicial and municipal administration.
