Summary from the Ontario Heritage Foundation's website
Originally called Morphy's Falls, this settlement on the Mississippi River took the name of Carleton Place in 1830 when a post office was opened. The construction of railway lines from Brockville and Ottawa later in the century greatly stimulated the community's growth.
