Summary from the Ontario Heritage Foundation's website
Creation of a water route from the Bay of Quinte to Lake Simcoe began in 1833 with construction of a lock at Bobcaygeon. Since the completion of the system through to Georgian Bay in 1920, the Trent-Severn has become one of Ontario's major recreational waterways.
